Becoming Energy Efficient
ECO2 Smart Education
It is now more important than ever to give children and young people opportunities to explore energy, climate change and the environment. There are lots of opportunities for all areas of the curriculum to be used as an avenue to bring this learning to life. In ECO2 Smart Education Resources you can find a wide range of educational materials and lesson plans, which inspire children and young people to think critically and innovatively about energy efficiency and sustainability.
If you are a County Durham school with an Energy Service Level Agreement (SLA), you can access all the ECO2 Smart Education Resources that have been developed and collated by OASES. Login here.
If you are a school in the North East of England, why not join the Energy Service Level Agreement and receive in school support, help with managing your bills and the ability to access energy data. If you would like to join, contact us today.
If you are a school outside of North East England, you can still access our additional resources for a small fee. Get in touch to become a member or to find out more.
ECO2 Smart Savings
After staff costs, energy and water costs are the largest expenditure for most schools. Through relatively simple behaviour changes, your school can save 10% off your energy bills. Our ECO2 Smart Savings Resources can help you make these changes.
To celebrate your savings, you need to be able to measure them. Monitoring your energy use helps you to identify energy excess and the most likely culprits (both technology and people) in order to make energy saving changes. Don’t forget to keep monitoring your energy, to see what impact the changes have made.
Durham County Council uses the Energy Portal software that enables users to see their electricity, gas and water usage. Durham schools have their own dedicated login, if you have forgotten yours please contact [email protected].
If your local authority doesn’t offer a similar service then contact them to find out what data they can provide or get in touch with [email protected].

ECO2 Smart Environment
There is overwhelming scientific evidence that climate change is happening as a result of human action. With global temperatures continuing to rise, more extreme weather occurring and the consequential effects of this, it is necessary to make and create change.
To prevent an increase in global temperatures above 1.5°C, which would have devastating effects on the planet, carbon pollution needs to be cut down 45% by 2030 and come down to 0% by 2050.
Education is vitally important to ensure that everyone has the skills to critically and innovatively face issues surrounding energy, climate change and the environment in all aspects of their life. Schools have a crucial role to play.
Our ECO2 Smart Environment Resources can help you to develop your own understanding of energy, climate change and sustainability, familiarising you with the terminology and enabling you to feel confident when teaching.
If you are a County Durham school with an Energy Service Level Agreement (SLA), you can access all the ECO2 Smart Environment Resources that have been developed and collated by OASES. Your OASES Energy Officer can also deliver a staff meeting on energy and climate change.
