Thornhill Primary

Thornhill Primary School in Shildon has reduced its energy use by upgrading to energy-efficient LED lighting across the school. The project took place in the October half-term in 2022 and replaced older fluorescent and incandescent bulbs with LEDs, which use up to 70% less electricity and have a much longer lifespan.

Since the installation, the school has seen a noticeable reduction in electricity consumption, leading to lower energy bills and reduced carbon emissions. The longer lifespan of LED bulbs also means fewer replacements are needed, reducing maintenance costs and waste.

With the help of their school’s OASES Energy Officer, pupils have also been involved in monitoring energy use and learning how the switch to LED lighting contributes to tackling climate change. The brighter, more efficient lighting has improved classroom conditions while supporting the school’s sustainability goals.

This project demonstrates how a simple, cost-effective change can deliver long-term environmental and financial benefits for schools and their communities.
