Howden-le-Wear Academy
Howden-le-Wear Academy
The OASES Energy Officer for Howden-le-Wear Academy visited the school in October 2024 to help improve climate understanding and literacy in school.
They used their credits for two half day climate education sessions with Year 4 and Year 6. The children already had a good understanding of how we can change our behaviour to help our planet but wanted to know more about the new technologies we are using to help tackle climate change. From this the OASES Energy Officer developed and delivered two differentiated education sessions:
- Year 4 learned how we can use light and technology monitors to help us monitor and reduce electricity use in school. They also investigated the possibility of installing solar panels on their school roof, discussing both the positives and potential barriers to this.
- Year 6 learnt about renewable technologies and enjoyed generating their own renewable energy using our wind and solar energy kits. They also interrogated key climate and technology misconceptions that have been shared on social media and now feel more confident and capable in identifying misleading media and fact checking information.
