Belmont C of E Primary School
Belmont C of E Primary School
Belmont C of E Primary School moved into a new building on a modern, new shared campus with Belmont Community School. The campus caters for more than 1,200 children and young people, and represents County Durham’s first low-carbon school sites. Both schools are fitted with sustainability features such as air-source heat pumps and photovoltaic solar panels.
Heating
The new school building is heated by air-source heat pumps, using a combination of underfloor heating and air handling units which distribute heat evenly. The school is not connected to gas mains so all of their heating is provided through the air-source heat pumps.
All classrooms are fitted with wall thermostats which are set to 21°C with +/- 1°C adjustment. All of the heated areas within school are monitored using an online system that identifies areas of high or low heat so adjustments can be made if needed.
Electricity
The new school building has a large bank of solar panels on their flat roof which supplies the school with a proportion of their electricity.
Lights within school are a combination of sensor and manual with a combination of diffused and direct lighting to make the learning spaces comfortable.
